Coastal EcologyThe coasts around Aberdeen vary from the rocky cliffs south of Aberdeen to the extensive sand dunes of the coast north of Aberdeen. Within this area are the estuaries of several rivers, particularly important being the Ythan estuary which is of international importance as a site for the breeding of Eider ducks.

Over 250 species of bird have been recorded within the Forvie National Nature Reserve, where the Ythan estuary is situated. An extensive range of investigations has been carried out on the Ythan's birds, but two species have been the subject of long term studies: the eider duck (Somateria mollissima) and the shelduck (Tadorna tadorna).

In this group you will get the chance to explore the cliffs and sea bird sanctuary as well as carry out field work in the Forvie National Nature reserve and Ythan Estuary. The group will also examine the possible consequences of a controversial golfing development soon to be started in the dunes north of the city by Donald Trump.
